UK Cyber Security Strategy

What is the UK Cyber Security Strategy?
The UK's first Cyber Security Strategy published by the UK
Government in June 2009 recognises the challenges of cyber security
and the need to address them "swiftly and effectively". All this is
being done in the context of the wider UK
National Security Strategy.
With more than £50bn spent online by UK consumers annually, and
90% of high street transactions done using credit and debit
cards (and the underlying wired and wireless technology), the
UK Cyber Security Strategy's objective is to enable citizens,
business and government to enjoy "the full benefits of a safe,
secure and resilient cyber space". In doing so, the strategy also
aims to "address the risks, reduce benefits to criminals and
terrorists, and seize opportunities in cyber space to enhance the
UK's overall security and resilience."
The UK’s approach to cyber security appears to be reaping
dividends; a report published by the House of Lords EU Home Affairs
sub-committee, entitled
‘Protecting Europe against large-scale cyber attacks’, in March
2010, concluded that the UK is “reasonably well placed to cope with
acute disruption to the internet” resulting from a large-scale
cyber attack, or natural or man-made disaster. Looking at the EU’s
own policy on protecting Europe from such attacks, the report
acknowledged the constant threat posed to the internet, but said
the UK is one of Europe’s leading cyber security advocates.
How will the Government drive the UK Cyber Security
Strategy?
Driving the UK Cyber Security Strategy, and the associated
cross-Government programme of work, will be the Office of Cyber
Security, which will benefit from new funding at its disposal to
detect attacks, identify risks, and provide secure intelligence
sharing systems about threats and attacks.
