UK Cyber Security Strategy 2009

UK Cyber Security Strategy 2009

What is the UK Cyber Security Strategy?

In June 2009, the UK's first Cyber Security Strategy was published by the UK Government. The strategy recognises the challenges of cyber security and the need to address them "swiftly and effectively". All this is being done in the context of the wider UK National Security Strategy.

With more than £50bn spent online by UK consumers annually, and 90% of high street transactions done using credit and debit cards (and the underlying wired and wireless technology), the UK Cyber Security Strategy's objective is to enable citizens, business and government to enjoy "the full benefits of a safe, secure and resilient cyber space". In doing so, the strategy also aims to "address the risks, reduce benefits to criminals and terrorists, and seize opportunies in cyber space to enhance the UK's overall security and resilience."

How will the Government drive the UK Cyber Security Strategy?

Driving this strategy, and the associated cross-Government programme of work, will be the newly-formed Office of Cyber Security, which will benefit from new funding at its disposal to detect attacks, identify risks, and provide secure intelligence sharing systems about threats and attacks.
